In The Spotlight - John Smith

John Smith How long have you been performing in shows
Only since 2006 as a performer but I was involved in the Loughborough theatre scene for seven years before that as the leisure writer on the Loughborough Echo.

What got you interested in music / theatre
I've always liked it although I've no background in it, no performing in junior groups or doing backstage stuff or any of that and none of my family have any history with any local groups either.
I think it was only once I started covering it for the Echo that I remembered how much I enjoyed it.

What was your first show
I think everyone knows what my first show was! It was Joseph in 2006 for which I did my weekly diary in the paper. It was an amazing experience (the show, not the diary) that got me totally hooked on performing.

What has been your favourite show and/or character and why
Joseph was memorable simply because it was my first show and playing Skip Snip in Little Shop of Horrors because it was the first time I'd ever sung solo on the stage.

What has been your most embarassing or funniest moment in a show
My attempts at dancing are weekly source of embarassment!
Aside of that, during the dress rehearsal for Joseph I forgot the detachable front section of my loin cloth and found myself somewhat exposed and underdressed on stage.
Also, waiting to in the wings to do my solo piece for Little Shop I became convinced I'd sing badly unless I ready the safety notice next to an electric switch on the wall next to me. Mad, but that's what nerves do to your brain!

What has been your proudest moment
Getting into the cast for Little Shop of Horrors. It was a small cast, I had only done two shows previously and I was convinced I was going to miss out to the more experienced and better performers going for the same parts I was. So I was thrilled (and amazed) when I got in.

If you could choose any show to perform in, what would it be and why
I'd love to do both Barnum and Singin' in the Rain as they're two of my favourite shows. And if they ever do a show about the career and music of Oasis, I'm there.

Do you have any plans to pursue theatre as a career
No, I'm happy with sports journalism. But theatre is a fantastic hobby and something I love doing.
